Welcome to Vage Walking
My name is Simon Vage, and I hope you enjoy the walks included within these pages. I have categorised the walks into specific areas in Cornwall. These areas are the old Hundreds of Cornwall. The Hundreds of Cornwall were administrative divisions in which Cornwall was divided between 925 AD and 1894 AD, when they were replaced with local government districts. My walks are divided into these areas because each has its own distinct character and charm. To make things a little easier, each walk is conveniently marked using Google Maps.

My Story
It finally happened!

I’m a published author of a Walking Book that is accompanied with the Cornish Legend which has inspired the walk that is local to it. Each walk (8 in total) is designed around little legs and with family story telling, as its incentive.

It is available at National Trust shops, Gift shops and through Waterstones, Foyles, Amazon, Blackwells or direct from Tor Mark Press.

Short Walks in Cornwall

Areas

Kerrier map

Kerrier

Kerrier takes in the beautiful Lizard Peninsula, and includes major towns such as Helston and Falmouth. It has been one of the first places in which Cornwall’s national emblem (the Chough) returned to breed.

Penwith Map

Penwith

Penwith, which literally means `The headland at the end` (Pennwydh), was one of the last areas of Cornwall to be effected by the English language. As an area, it has a stunningly unspoilt coastline and internal commons and moors, as well as being blessed with golden beaches. A truly wonderful area in which to walk.

Powdershire map

Powdershire

Powdershire, takes in the rolling peninsular of the Roseland as well as the capital of Cornwall, Truro. Walking here, allows for gentle coastline and inland footpaths.

Pydarshire map

Pydarshire

Pydarshire includes many famous villages of Cornwall`s North Coast, as well as the abandoned mining landscape around St. Agnes, which makes for atmospheric walks.

West Fowy map

West Fowy (West Wivelshire)

West Fowy or West Wivelshire, as it also became known, has a dramatic coastline, woodlands and river walks all of which can be enjoyed, and where without too much trouble a secluded walk can be found.

East Ryslegh map

East Ryslegh (East Wivelshire)

East Ryslegh or East Wivelshire, as it also became known, has Cornwall`s longest border connection to Devon and England. It has some beautiful river walks as well as Cornwall`s `Forgotten Peninsular` that of Rame Head.

Triggshire map

Triggshire

Triggshire, is mentioned in the 7th century as the `Land of the Three War Hosts`. Fortunately, today we have no concerns of war hosts, instead we have the official `gateway to the moors` and a great coastline. Ideal for walkers.

Lesnewth map

Lesnewth

Lesnewth, is the Hundred which can boast the old `Cathedral in the Moor` as well as the birth place of King Arthur, both locations which are superbly based for walks.

Stratton map

Stratton

Stratton, is the Hundred that takes us as far North as we can go in Cornwall, taking us past Bude and on up to Morwenstow. The dramatic coastline here is unlike much of the rest of Cornwall and is well worth walking along and admiring.

Expeditions

I have been fortunate enough to have many of my own mini expeditions. Now, I am aware that this sounds grand, pompous even, but each of my journeys have had a purpose – that of journeying with family or friends to see and experience places that I would not normally experience, using the physical abilities available to me. Several years ago, on the eve (quite literally) of one such expedition to Finland I fell ill, and found myself bed bound for several months. Now, back on my feet I am resolved to live life as much as possible and, with my wife`s support and that of wider family and friends, I intend to have as many mini expeditions as it is possible to have. Those within these pages are ones that I hope may inspire you to do the same.

Walks Outside of Cornwall

Some of my walks from outside of Cornwall. Not quite expeditions abroad but certainly worth a mention.
